Summary of the position
We are looking for the candidate who can join KIS's core team of specialists in designing, implementation, and operation of efficient and cost-effective breeding programs for different agricultural species on a national and international levels, and be actively involved in several key aspects of the KIS’s scientific outputs. The position is located in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Some international traveling may be anticipated.

Key Responsibilities

  • To design and practically implement breeding programs
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies for applied programs
  • Perform (large scale) quantitative/genomic/genetic evaluations
  • Data processing and implementation of the relevant results into breeding program with relation to system biology aspects
  • Reporting and documentation
  • Participation in relevant R&D work

Desired Skills and Experience:

Required qualifications

  • Ph.D. in the biological/agricultural sciences with an aspect to the plant genetic resources, plant breeding, plant genetics, quantitative genetics/biostatistics;
  • Deep understanding of relevant areas of molecular genetics. Experience from large scale genetic evaluations and/or analysis of genomic data is desirable;
  • At least 3-5 years’ relevant work experience (or equivalent, such as e.g. time spent on relevant activities during Ph.D. training), preferably in an international environment;
  • Preference will be given to candidates with advanced knowledge of plant breeding, including experience with the application of relevant genomics methods, bioinformatics and other modern breeding techniques;
  • Experience in project development, coordination, monitoring and/or management to be able to provide effective backstopping to partners;
  • Strong computer skills including good knowledge of database and genome mapping applications;
  • Bioinformatics background, knowledge about data managing and ability to combine data obtained from different breeding applications will be highly desirable skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken English required, other EU languages an attribute; knowledge of Slovenian language will be an advantage.

The Agricultural Institute of Slovenia invites applications for a position that leads to a long term appointment at the Crop Science Department, starting in spring, 2020.

Research area
The successful candidate will be working with a number of agricultural crops (mainly potatoes, cereals, grain legumes, …) within the section of genetic diversity, crop genetics, and biotechnology. In particular, you will be associated with projects studying responses of plants to biotic and abiotic stresses.

We offer
an exciting work environment combining agricultural sciences with plant molecular biology and physiology. Research work within a network of collaborating partners from Slovenia, South East, and other European countries.

Formalities and salary range
The appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Slovenian Ministry of Finance and the Slovenian Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Slovenian Ministry of Finance and the Slovenian Confederation of Professional Associations.
