{"id":6238,"date":"2026-01-27T09:11:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T08:11:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kis.si\/about-the-institute\/infrastructure\/mycology-laboratory\/"},"modified":"2026-09-18T11:37:18","modified_gmt":"2026-09-18T09:37:18","slug":"mycology-laboratory","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.kis.si\/en\/about-the-institute\/infrastructure\/mycology-laboratory\/","title":{"rendered":"Mycology Laboratory"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are appointed by the Administration for Food Safety, Veterinary Sector and Plant Protection Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food as <\/span><b>Slovenian Official Laboratory for Fungi and Oomycetes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br\/><br\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, we are partners in the consortium of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrl-glive.si\/\"><b>National Reference Laboratory for Fungi and Oomycetes<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (on crops, vegetables and fruit plants, oomycetes on all plants).<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Areas of work<\/h2>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Expert work <\/b><\/h5>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Diagnostic Services &#8211;\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We perform the <\/span><b>detection and identification of phytopathogenic fungi and oomycetes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fungus-like organisms) using <\/span><b>morphological and various molecular identification methods<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (barcode determination, specific PCR reactions, quantitative qPCR).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our work is carried out in accordance with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slo-akreditacija.si\/acreditation\/kmetijski-institut-slovenije\/?lang=en\"><b>standard SIST EN ISO\/IEC 17025:2017<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which defines the requirements for the competence of testing laboratories. <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mycological Laboratory has accredited two methods for the detection and identification of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phytophthora ramorum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which causes phytophthora twig blight:<\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isolation and morphological identification of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phytophthora ramorum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> according to the EPPO standard PM7\/66(1), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phytophthora ramorum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, EPPO Bulletin (2006) 36, 145-155 (MET-MIK-003).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Species identification of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phytophthora ramorum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using PCR (MET-MIK-004), based on the standard of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures 27 (ISPM 27), Diagnostic Protocols 23: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phytophthora ramorum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ISPM 27 Diagnostic Protocols for Regulated Pests (2017), DP 23-1 \u2013 DP 23-24; chapter 3.6.3.1, modified method.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Discovery of new fungal and fomycete secies in Slovenia and beyond.<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Systematic Research on Fungal Diseases of Selected Agricultural Plants, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persimmons, olive trees, sweet potatoes, asparagus, and hazelnuts. <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Consultancy on preventive measures and control methods for managing fungal diseases in agricultural crops.<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Systematic monitoring of quarantine fungal species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phyllosticta solitaria, Tilletia indica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other species).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Monitoring the occurrence of regulated non-quarantine phytopathogenic fungi and oomycetes (NRQP) on planting material and seeds.<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Preparation and maintenance of a collection of reference materials and a working collection of fungal isolates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Implementation of various tools and methods for resistance management and studying the resistance of selected fungi <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(e.g., <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Botrytis cinerea, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gZdN7kMBWhw&#038;t=109s\">Zymoseptoria tritici<\/a><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><b> to fungicides, including determining effective concentrations and detecting mutations in harmful organism populations.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Research work<\/b><\/h5>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>taxonomy, phylogeny and biology of agriculturally important fungi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (both pathogenic and beneficial for plant growth or disease control),<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the use of <\/span><b>fungi in biotic control<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>development of methods for identifying and detecting selected fungal species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>early detection of fungal diseases <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in collaboration with other fileds in the Plant protection department.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We participate in several research projects as project leaders or partners.
