Brdo Infrastructure Center

The Brdo Infrastructure Center (IC Brdo) is dedicated to the implementation of professional tasks in the field of fruit growing and plant protection against diseases and pests, as well as fundamental and applied research and the testing of new technological measures in pomology.

IC Brdo is one of four units within the Infrastructure, Research, and Knowledge Transfer Department at the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia and comprises a modern experimental orchard spanning 16,8 hectares.

On 14,9 hectares, apples are produced under the “Selected Quality” (Izbrana kakovost) scheme, which guarantees nature-friendly production methods. A portion of the apple orchard is dedicated to organic production, while another part is used for testing newer varieties.

The orchard also maintains a collection of over 400 different varieties of apples, pears, nashi pears, cherries, plums, nuts, and berries. This is the most extensive collection of fruit plants in Slovenia, serving as a valuable source of genetic material for further research and development in fruit growing.

At IC Brdo, we regularly organize various fruit-growing professional meetings, excursions, training sessions, field exercises for students, and events for primary and secondary school pupils. Our most recognizable event is the “Fruit Tree Pruning Demonstration,” held annually in March.
