Insect-IMP – Improved Knowledge Transfer for Sustainable Insect Breeding
Project description
Insect-IMP (CA22140) is an international research network within the COST programme, dedicated to improving knowledge transfer and developing sustainable approaches to insect breeding and farming.
Insect farming plays an increasingly important role in providing alternative protein sources and developing sustainable food systems. Despite the rapid growth of the sector, knowledge of the genetics of many insect species remains limited, while systematic breeding programmes are still relatively underdeveloped.
Insect-IMP brings together researchers from the fields of genetics, entomology and veterinary sciences, alongside industry representatives and other stakeholders. The Action focuses on transferring knowledge between different areas of insect farming and applying established breeding and genetic evaluation methods from traditional animal breeding, including apiculture.
International cooperation within the Action contributes to the sustainable development of the insect farming sector, strengthens European research capacities and establishes a foundation for long-term collaboration between research institutions and industry. It also supports informed decision-making on regulations related to insect breeding and farming.
Main Activities
The Action is organised into eight thematic Working Groups addressing key aspects of insect breeding and farming:
- WG1: Population structure, inbreeding management and genetic diversity.
- WG2: Mating control.
- WG3: Interactions between genetics, environment and communities in insect farming.
- WG4: Breeding objectives.
- WG5: Phenotyping systems.
- WG6: Breeding value estimation.
- WG7: Dissemination and communication.
- WG8: Inclusiveness and representation.
The Action promotes knowledge exchange and the sharing of good practices through international meetings, workshops and training activities, as well as Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) and Virtual Mobility opportunities. Particular attention is given to involving young researchers, strengthening research capacities and fostering cooperation between the scientific community and industry.
Role of the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia
The Agricultural Institute of Slovenia (KIS) plays an important role in the management and implementation of Insect-IMP.
Dr Jana Obšteter serves as the Action Vice-Chair, Grant Holder Scientific Representative and Co-Leader of Working Group 7 (Dissemination and Communication).
Through its involvement, KIS actively contributes to international research cooperation, knowledge exchange and the dissemination of the Action’s results among the scientific community, industry and other relevant stakeholders.
Funding
