Project description

Climate change is already causing more frequent heatwaves, wildfires, floods and prolonged droughts in Slovenia, affecting agriculture, forestry, biodiversity, water resources, human health and infrastructure.

LIFE4ADAPT aims to strengthen Slovenia’s long-term climate resilience by improving adaptation policies, enhancing cooperation between stakeholders and developing practical solutions to address climate-related challenges. Building on Slovenia’s Strategic Framework for Climate Change Adaptation (2016), the project brings together 14 partners and five affiliated organisations from different sectors and will run until 2032.

Project Objectives

The project focuses on strengthening Slovenia’s preparedness for climate change through a range of interconnected activities:

  • Establishing a National Centre for Climate Analysis and Projections and updating national climate projections.
  • Strengthening cooperation between national, regional and local authorities to improve the coordination of adaptation policies and measures.
  • Supporting municipalities and regions through training, knowledge exchange and greater involvement in the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change.
  • Improving water management, climate-related databases and digital tools for assessing environmental and agricultural impacts.
  • Developing educational programmes, communication campaigns and financial mechanisms to support the implementation of adaptation measures.

A key part of LIFE4ADAPT is the implementation of 14 pilot projects in agriculture, forestry, nature conservation, health, water management and the economy. These pilots will demonstrate practical adaptation solutions that can be replicated across Slovenia to reduce climate-related risks and improve the resilience of local communities.

Project activities, knowledge resources and good practices will be shared through the national climate portal Samo1planet, which brings together information on climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Partnership

LIFE4ADAPT brings together 14 project partners and five affiliated organisations, including ministries, research institutions, public agencies, local authorities and non-governmental organisations. The Agricultural Institute of Slovenia contributes its expertise in agriculture and climate change adaptation.

Funding

LIFE4ADAPT (LIFE23-IPC-SI-LIFE4ADAPT) is an Integrated Project co-funded by the European Union under the LIFE Programme, the Slovenian Climate Change Fund and contributions from project partners.
