We are involved in systematic surveillance programme of quarantine nematodes.
The pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) is categorised as an extremely dangerous pest in forestry. It mainly threatens pines (genus Pinus), but also to a lesser extent other conifers such as larches, firs and spruces (Larix, Abies, Picea). This nematode has not yet been found in Slovenia. Systematic control of the pine wood nematode is aimed at preventing its introduction and spread throughout the country.
Potato cyst nematodes (Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida) are dangerous parasitic pests and can lead to a significant reduction in potato yields. The presence of yellow and white potato cyst nematodes has been confirmed in Slovenia. Systematic surveillance is carried out to prevent further introduction and spread of potato cyst nematodes.
